Boarding School Summer Visit Tips From Holly Treat

Expert Advice On How To Plan, Execute & Evaluate Your Summer Boarding School Tours

Summer is a time to hit the road and explore potential boarding schools. Unlike the more formal visit in the fall, summer tours offer a relaxed opportunity to get a feel for different campuses without the pressure of an immediate interview. Granted, the campuses are quiet, but you can still get a feel for the location, size, and program offerings.

Hello, I’m Holly Treat, Boarding School Advisor at The Bertram Group. I’ve compiled 10 essential tips to ensure your summer boarding school visits are both enjoyable and productive. These tips are for parents and students alike. I hope you find them empowering and encouraging. And remember, The Bertram Group is here to provide guidance and support in understanding your options and finding the perfect fit.

Holly’s Summer Boarding School Visit Tips

  1. Plan Ahead: Since you're only touring, you can easily visit two nearby schools in one day. Don't worry if you need to reschedule visits—it's common when visiting multiple schools on different days.

  2. Do Your Homework: Check out the website and print material you have received beforehand so you have a sense of where you are headed and you’re ready with questions.

  3. Scout the Spot: Find the parking, bathrooms, and key spots—future you will thank you when you return in the fall for your “official tour and interview”. It is even a great time to find a favorite lunch spot to revisit.

  4. Relax, It’s Not an Interview: This is just a “look around” to see if it feels right to come back for a more official visit in the fall.

  5. Phone Down: Leave the phone in the car—be present and soak it all in.

  6. Keep an Open Mind: Stay curious—how do you feel as you experience the campus? Happy, nervous, excited?

  7. Ask Away: Chat with your student tour guide or admission officer after the tour and ask your questions—be friendly!

  8. Reflect: Jot down your thoughts after the visit, before you debrief with your parents. It is important that you form your own opinions about your experience.

  9. Send a Follow-up Email: If you met with an admission officer or coach, send them a brief thank-you note.

  10. Have Fun!: Remember, this is all about exploring—enjoy the adventure that is just beginning!
